What does a 1st AD do?
The 1st AD is there to help the director with practical issues, so that the director can get on with the creative side of directing. The 1st AD co-ordinates the rest of the crew as well as the cast, sorts out the filming schedule and deals with the compliance paperwork.
The 1st AD reports to the
Director and may progress to be a Director themselves, although many remain as 1st ADs and others move on to producer roles.
To be a good 1st AD one must remain calm under pressure, be a good communicator and a great people manager.
